SUMMARY:Return to Paueru Gai: Celebrating 50 Years of Powell Street Festival
DESCRIPTION:Since 1977\, the annual Powell Street Festival in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside has been a celebration of Japanese Canadian history\, art\, and culture. \nIn the newly released Return to Paueru Gai\, Emiko Morita has collected essays\, photographs\, and archival images that tell the story of the festival’s crucial role in uplifting Vancouver’s Japanese Canadian community and affirming its place in the history of the city and country. \nJoin us to celebrate the publication of this book and the 50th anniversary of Powell Street Festival. This evening will feature a conversation between editor Emiko Morita\, contributors Charlie Smith and Julia Aoki\, and moderated by Margaret Gallagher (CBC host of North by Northwest). \nThe evening will open with a martial arts demonstration by UBC Bujutsu\, and close with a drumming performance by Uzume Taiko. \n— \nThis event is presented in partnership with the Powell Street Festival Society.
