SUMMARY:Harmony Guzheng Concert "Strings of Heritage"
DESCRIPTION:The Harmony Guzheng Ensemble has proudly dedicated the past seventeen years to promoting and preserving traditional Chinese culture through music. This milestone concert celebrates not only our journey but also the universal beauty of cultural exchange. Through a diverse repertoire\, we aim to create an immersive experience that bridges the ancient Silk Road with the majestic landscapes of the Canadian Rockies—a true celebration of shared heritage and artistic expression. \nJoin the Harmony Guzheng Ensemble at Bella Concert Hall on May 17th for an unforgettable evening of traditional Chinese music blended with contemporary compositions. This concert showcases the timeless beauty of the Guzheng\, a 21-string zither with over 2\,500 years of history. Experience masterful performances that celebrate cultural heritage and unity\, bringing the evocative sounds of the Guzheng to life. \n \n\nHarmony Guzheng Ensemble: Tradition and Innovation\nSince its founding\, Harmony Guzheng Ensemble has been dedicated to promoting Chinese traditional culture in Calgary and surrounding areas\, particularly through performances featuring the guzheng\, a traditional Chinese instrument. The ensemble members actively participate in community education and outreach activities\, offering free guzheng demonstrations at schools\, libraries\, and community centers for audiences of all ages. These activities have not only deepened public understanding and appreciation of guzheng artistry but also fostered cross-cultural exchanges and mutual understanding. \nCommunity Education and Outreach:\nOver the years\, the ensemble has engaged the public through various activities such as workshops\, lectures\, and interactive demonstrations\, sharing the unique charm of Chinese traditional music with a wide audience. Whether children or adults\, participants have had the opportunity to experience the joy of playing the guzheng and learn about its cultural significance. \nCharity Performances:\nFor over a decade\, the ensemble has actively participated in charitable events\, performing for local nursing homes and other institutions to bring warmth and hope through music. These performances have provided emotional comfort to those in need while exemplifying the ensemble’s commitment to social responsibility and humanitarian values. \nCollaborative Performances:\nThe ensemble has frequently collaborated with other local art groups to explore the harmonious beauty of different artistic forms. For example\, they have worked with dance troupes to combine guzheng music with graceful choreography\, partnered with calligraphy artists to create a fusion of visual and auditory arts\, and collaborated with choirs to explore the interplay between vocal and instrumental music\, creating unforgettable artistic experiences. \nCultural Exchange Projects:\nTo promote mutual understanding and respect among cultures\, the ensemble has actively engaged with cultural groups from other countries\, participating in various cultural exchange programs. They have shared the stage with Korean traditional percussion ensembles\, presenting a vibrant dialogue between Eastern and Western musical traditions\, even though no joint performance was held. Additionally\, the ensemble has performed alongside players of the Korean Gayageum\, showcasing a fascinating dialogue between two similar yet distinct East Asian string instruments and broadening the ensemble members’ artistic horizons. \nExchange Programs with Chinese Guzheng Institutes:\nNotably\, the ensemble has hosted two exchange and collaborative performances with Professor Lei and her group of over 50 students from the Guzheng Department of Xi’an Conservatory of Music in Calgary. These exchanges significantly enhanced the ensemble’s performance standards and deepened their knowledge of guzheng artistry. Through collaboration with professional institutions\, ensemble members gained invaluable guidance and experience\, further advancing the development of guzheng artistry in the local community.

SUMMARY:Asian Canadian Journeys: Identity\, Belonging\, and Everyday Integration
DESCRIPTION:Asian Canadian Journeys: Identity\, Belonging\, and Everyday Integration\nVirtual Panel on Teams\nMay 15 (12:00 -1:30pm MDT)\n\nMay is Asian Heritage Month\, a time to reflect on identity\, sense of belonging\, and what it means to build a life across diverse cultures and settings. This year\, we are hosting a panel discussion that brings together Canadians of Asian descent to share their personal journeys of integrating into Canadian society. Through their stories\, we will explore how identity is shaped over time\, how belonging is felt in different spaces\, and how integration is lived in both quiet and visible ways. These conversations will not offer one single narrative\, but rather open up space for the many ways Asian Canadians carry\, negotiate\, and express who they are. Whether through language\, community\, work\, or home\, these reflections remind us that identity and belonging are not fixed. They grow\, shift\, and take form in relationship with others. This panel is an invitation to listen\, to reflect\, and to sit with the complexity of what it means to find connection and place in a country that is still learning how to hold all of our stories.\nPlease join this session and register on: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdRZ6K4o6JJ8I9C9tUkIP-o2l0bjPYU7QKFOgYFOMBncEMLkg/viewform?usp=dialog\nAn invite will be sent once your registration is confirmed.
