SUMMARY:Cultural Transcendence: Gu Xiong's Forty Years of Migration and Artistic Practice 文化升華: 顧雄四十年移民與創作
DESCRIPTION:Multimedia artist Gu Xiong\, Professor in the Department of Art History\, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia\, draws on his forty years of migration experience to explore how individuals continually reshape their identities amid the tension of multiple cultures\, while elevating their artistic practice. Meanwhile\, he intertwines his person experiences into the historical context of early Chinese migration\, revealing vitality and the emergence of hybrid identities in overlooked areas. His works center on personal memory\, connecting individual experience\, local context\, and global flows. \nDenise Fong (PhD)\, Curator of Urban Cultures from Museum of Vancouver moderates the event and engages in conversation with Prof. Gu.

DESCRIPTION:On behalf of YCPA\, we invite you to join us at the eighteenth edition of the Orchid Ball\, Riding the Waves of Change\, to be held on May 9\, 2026\, from 5:00 p.m. to 00:30 a.m. at the Maison Principale located at 872 Rue du Couvent\, Montréal\, QC H4C 2R6. \nWe envision communities that not only withstand change but lead it. As social\, economic\, and cultural waves continuously reshape our reality\, it is our entrepreneurs building new enterprises\, our executives breaking barriers in corporate and public leadership\, our educators guiding the next generation\, and our innovators pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. This year\, the Orchid Ball carries this vision through the theme Riding the Waves of Change: recognizing that in an ecosystem where change is the only constant\, communities play a vital role in helping us navigate each new shift. It is a call to acknowledge the people and partners who create the conditions for turning shifting realities into new pathways for shared prosperity. \nPS: Please note that all ticket purchases are final and non-refundable.

SUMMARY:Writing the Body Politic with Joanne Leow
DESCRIPTION:What does it really mean to say that the personal is the political? In this craft lecture\, Joanne Leow shares the challenges and methods that she used to weave fragmentary life writing with political critique in her new book Exhumations. \nDrawing from her experience as a journalist\, researcher\, educator\, and poet\, she will discuss how to calibrate between different registers of writing while preserving the coherence of a longer manuscript. She will examine what it means to write not just as an author but also as a mother\, daughter\, caregiver\, patient\, and political subject. \nWe will be using a new format for this Creative Writing Class. Joanne will be giving a lecture on writing craft\, followed by a Q + A. There will not be peer group work in this session. \n—\n \nJoanne Leow grew up in Singapore and lives on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. She is Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair at Simon Fraser University. Her work includes the academic monograph Counter-Cartographies: Reading Singapore Otherwise (Liverpool University Press\, 2024)\, the poetry collection Seas Move Away (Turnstone Press\, 2022)\, and the hybrid memoir Exhumations: Inside the Body of the Petrostate (Alchemy Press\, 2026).

SUMMARY:Intro to Indian Classical Dance: Manipuri with Arno Kamolika
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever experienced the history and artistry of Indian Classical Dance? Come learn about this culture of movement with the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver and Aṣṭa Alliance! The second program in this series will highlight the dance form Manipuri with expert dancer and educator Arno Kamolika. \nManipuri dance is one of the major Indian Classical Dance forms named after the region of its origin – Manipur\, a beautiful land tucked away in the northeastern hills of the Indian subcontinent. Characterized by free-flowing wave-like movements\, Manipuri is also noted for its unique contrast between lasya and tandava\, as the dance moves freely between gentle and playful lasya movements to brisk and dynamic tandava movements. \nArno Kamolika\, who began her dance career as a student and practitioner of Manipuri dance\, will walk us through her personal journey in dance through demonstration and discussion. \nDuring this program\, you can expect to see a brief Manipuri performance alongside a discussion of the history\, cultural context\, and techniques of this dance form. No experience needed\, just curiosity! \n\nThis program is presented in partnership with the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver and Aṣṭa Alliance. \n\nLive Music at VPL is generously supported by VPL Foundation donors.
