SUMMARY:Silk\, Bamboo\, and Gai Lan
DESCRIPTION:Calgary’s eclectic Gai Lan Ensemble presents a special concert to celebrate Asian Heritage Month. \nThe program is a conversation between the past and present\, where ancient instruments made from silk and bamboo give voice to exciting new musical works. \nYou will hear 5 new compositions written and arranged by Asian composers: Rita Ueda (Canada/Japan)\, Chris Hung (Hongkong)\, Guo Wenjing (China)\, Liu Xing (China) and Qu Dawei (China). We are also excited to premiere a brand-new work written for us by Gai Lan Ensemble’s very own erhu player\, Kainai musician Jace Eagle Bear. \nThis concert features renowned suo-na artist Zhongxi Wu from Vancouver\, talented erhu artist Lemon Wang\, and award-winning flutist Jiajia Li\, the leader of Gai Lan Ensemble. \nWe thank Calgary Foundation\, Moonlight Books and Gifts\, Asian Heritage Foundation and Calgary Chinatown Lion’s Club for their generous support of this event. The poster was designed by Calgary artist Michelle Ku. \nTicket Link

SUMMARY:Eating Bitterness - Canadian Journey of Exclusion to Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is about the resilience of Chinese Canadians against the lasting oppressing impacts of the Chinese Exclusion Act (1923-1947) that created absences in Chinese Canadian communities\, such as generational severance\, lack of representation in leadership\, and erasure from the dominant Canadian narrative. This history has been omitted from Canadian history and continues to be primarily unknown. Highlighting key Chinese Canadian figures in the community who fought back against systemic racism through various interactive elements\, this project reflects on an important part of Canadian history and to solicit viewers to participate – how can they re-imagine a more inclusive future.  An invitation for all Canadians – What would Canada be without me and my family?

SUMMARY:FascinAsian Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Land Acknowledgement\n\n\n\n\n\nThe FascinAsian Film Festival acknowledges that we live and work in the territories of the Anishinaabeg\, Cree\, Dakota\, Dene\, and Oji-Cree Nations\, and the heartland of the Metis people. Treaty 1\, signed in 1871\, took this territory from seven local Anishinaabe First Nations to make the land available for settler use and ownership. We thank the First Nations\, Métis and Inuit communities that have cared for Turtle Island since the beginning. With this acknowledgment\, we remind ourselves of discriminatory\, racist\, and colonial practices that have and continue to create barriers for Indigenous peoples and communities across Turtle Island. \n\n\nFor more info about the films and ticket reservation\, please visit FascinAsian Film Festival 2024 – Calgary \n\n
