Harmony Guzheng Ensemble: Tradition and Innovation
Since its founding, Harmony Guzheng Ensemble has been dedicated to promoting Chinese traditional culture in Calgary and surrounding areas, particularly through performances featuring the guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument. The ensemble members actively participate in community education and outreach activities, offering free guzheng demonstrations at schools, libraries, and community centers for audiences of all ages. These activities have not only deepened public understanding and appreciation of guzheng artistry but also fostered cross-cultural exchanges and mutual understanding.

Community Education and Outreach:
Over the years, the ensemble has engaged the public through various activities such as workshops, lectures, and interactive demonstrations, sharing the unique charm of Chinese traditional music with a wide audience. Whether children or adults, participants have had the opportunity to experience the joy of playing the guzheng and learn about its cultural significance.

Charity Performances:
For over a decade, the ensemble has actively participated in charitable events, performing for local nursing homes and other institutions to bring warmth and hope through music. These performances have provided emotional comfort to those in need while exemplifying the ensemble’s commitment to social responsibility and humanitarian values.

Collaborative Performances:
The ensemble has frequently collaborated with other local art groups to explore the harmonious beauty of different artistic forms. For example, they have worked with dance troupes to combine guzheng music with graceful choreography, partnered with calligraphy artists to create a fusion of visual and auditory arts, and collaborated with choirs to explore the interplay between vocal and instrumental music, creating unforgettable artistic experiences.

Cultural Exchange Projects:
To promote mutual understanding and respect among cultures, the ensemble has actively engaged with cultural groups from other countries, participating in various cultural exchange programs. They have shared the stage with Korean traditional percussion ensembles, presenting a vibrant dialogue between Eastern and Western musical traditions, even though no joint performance was held. Additionally, the ensemble has performed alongside players of the Korean Gayageum, showcasing a fascinating dialogue between two similar yet distinct East Asian string instruments and broadening the ensemble members’ artistic horizons.

Exchange Programs with Chinese Guzheng Institutes:
Notably, the ensemble has hosted two exchange and collaborative performances with Professor Lei and her group of over 50 students from the Guzheng Department of Xi’an Conservatory of Music in Calgary. These exchanges significantly enhanced the ensemble’s performance standards and deepened their knowledge of guzheng artistry. Through collaboration with professional institutions, ensemble members gained invaluable guidance and experience, further advancing the development of guzheng artistry in the local community.
