Intro to Indian Classical Dance: Manipuri with Arno Kamolika
Have you ever experienced the history and artistry of Indian Classical Dance? Come learn about this culture of movement with the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver and Aṣṭa Alliance! The second program in this series will highlight the dance form Manipuri with expert dancer and educator Arno Kamolika.
Manipuri dance is one of the major Indian Classical Dance forms named after the region of its origin – Manipur, a beautiful land tucked away in the northeastern hills of the Indian subcontinent. Characterized by free-flowing wave-like movements, Manipuri is also noted for its unique contrast between lasya and tandava, as the dance moves freely between gentle and playful lasya movements to brisk and dynamic tandava movements.
Arno Kamolika, who began her dance career as a student and practitioner of Manipuri dance, will walk us through her personal journey in dance through demonstration and discussion.
During this program, you can expect to see a brief Manipuri performance alongside a discussion of the history, cultural context, and techniques of this dance form. No experience needed, just curiosity!
This program is presented in partnership with the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver and Aṣṭa Alliance.
